Over time - and exacerbated by any change in climate - all pianos slowly fall out of tune. To ensure your piano stays harmonious, tuning is recommended at least once every six months. This is especially true in a climate such as Minnesota’s, with it’s extreme weather changes. Carefully making sure each is note harmonious and in tune with equal temperament is an essential part of your piano experience. All services include a cleaning of the piano.
Standard Tuning - $125
After tuning, “regulating the action” is the most common service required to improve the quality of tone and playability for your piano. The “action” of the piano is all the mechanical parts that cause the hammer to strike the strings once the key is pressed. Due to the many, complex wooden components that make up the action, there are many issues that can make your piano play improperly. If a note sounds too quiet or too loud, or has a “plunking” sound most likely the hammer is simply not striking the strings in their center. This is when you will require a regulation of the action.
If your piano hasn’t been tuned in a long time, or has suffered through changes in location or climate, often times a “pitch raise” is required. This involves tuning the piano more than once, to allow the strings to stretch and settle into their proper placement.
Advanced Tuning - $150
Action Regulation - $500-700
The hammers which strike the strings of your piano are covered in a felt which has a large impact on the tone of your piano. Over time, grooves can develop in the felt which create an inconsistent tone. Also, sometimes the felt becomes too compact or too soft, creating a tone that is too “tinny" or too quiet. “Voicing” the hammers of your piano ensures that an even, clear tone is consistent across all notes that you play.
Voicing - $300-500
When you’re playing your piano, every key should have a smooth, consistent feel. Wear and tear on the keys over time can slightly shift the keys placement, or erode the “bushings” of the key. Key Leveling realigns each key and makes sure it is weighted properly.
Key Leveling - $200-500
If you or someone you know has a piano that has been sitting unused for sometime, it may require some work to make it playable again. We can let you know what kind of investment it would require. There are many repairs not listed above that we can also help with, such as:
Broken keys, strings or hammers, tuning pins that slip, pedals that don’t work or stick, keys sticking, etc.
These services are offered on a job-by-job basis and require an assessment first.
